VITAL WEEKLY

VITAL WEEKLY just reviewed our 3 newest releases. The albums are available through bandcamp, click here.

“From the next release, with four players, I only heard of Goncalo Almeida (double bass) before. The other players are Carla Santana (electronics), Josè Lencastre (alto and tenor sax), and Maria do Mar (violin). They recorded eight pieces in a studio in Abóboda in October 2022. Spoiler alert: the Portuguese connection continues. This is more what I expect from A New Wave Of Jazz; it’s improvised music, which goes without saying, but by adding, for instance, electronics as an oddball, Here too, the saxophone plays a reasonably traditional role, just as the other instruments; again, there is nothing of that ‘my instrument is an object’ approach with these musicians. The contrast between the electronic side and the acoustic works quite well; the latter platy, at times, small melodic phrases, maybe as to mark a difference between the more abstract electronic side. I don’t know what these electronics are, but my best guess would be modular electronics. Sometimes, everybody leans towards a more abstract side, with carefully bending strings, small notes, and sparsely scattered silence. Throughout, the music sounds very controlled and quiet. It’s not easy to say this is because everyone is looking at each other, afraid to disturb the controlled music, maybe too restricted, but it can also be their intention to play the music in this controlled manner. This works quite well in a piece called ‘The Way Of Zen’ (perhaps an easy title). The hectic and chaos that sometimes comes with improvised music is also part of this, but it somehow works well.” Vital Weekly – The Netherlands

“While playing the CD by the Garuda Trio and Rodrigo Pinheiro, few can be classified as ‘jazz’ releases despite the label bearing the name jazz. The big disclaimer is, of course, that I am not an expert by any standard. I have to take such matters at face value, or as much I believe them to be. The trio’s lineup is Hugo Costa (alto saxophone), Hernani Faustino (double bass) and Joao Valinho (drums), guested by Rodrigo Pinheiro on piano. That already means ‘a jazz line up’, even when the result is more free jazz than trad jazz. However, again, warning: novices are piping an opinion, and their approach is also traditional in the free tradition. Each instrument sounds as expected, and while the 39 minutes are chaotic, playing these instruments is reasonably traditional. The three pieces were recorded in a studio in Lisbon in July 2022, and I am still determining how much of this is ‘live’ and how much is ‘edited’. What I found particularly noteworthy is that the saxophone is the instrument that is most up front, and the drums are relatively low in the mix. I wish that would have been different. Stylistically, this is the kind of music I have the most difficulty with; as a reviewer, it is complicated to review (see above), and as a listener, I can appreciate and enjoy the music’s raw energy.” Vital Weekly – The Netherlands

“Labelboss Dirk Serries plays (electric) guitar with the Lemadi trio. Le as in Jose Lencastre (alto sax), Ma as Martine Verhoeven (crumar piano) and Di for Dirk. They performed together for the first time on May 1st, 2023, at Jazzblazzt in Neeritter, The Netherlands, and the results were of such a kind that a release was needed. There are two pieces on this CD, spanning 51 minutes of music, so, the entire recording of that day. They lean towards the first CD I reviewed here by Serries’ label, with a dominant role for the saxophone, although it isn’t among the wind instruments I love most. That’s a pity, as I especially like what Verhoeven is doing here on the electric Crumar piano. Her tones are light, like snowflakes, with the possibility to change the tone. Serries knows how to isolate guitar tones, unlike snowflakes, but unspecified events and short attacks on isolated strings. This makes for a significant interaction, which I enjoyed very much, even in their most free jazz moments. But the omnipresence of the wailing saxophone is too much at times. When all three decide to go for an all-chaotic blast, it works fine; that’s where I enjoy saxophones best, which is the same in this case. It’s not babad, but it’s too much for me at times.” Vital Weekly – The Netherlands

NIEUWE NOTEN AGAIN

NIEUWE NOTEN is catching up with the catalog with this brand new review of HUNT AT THE BROOK AGAIN/HUNT AT THE BROOK WITH NEIL METCALFE, a double-disc making the return of the fantastic trio of BENEDICT TAYLOR (viola), TOM JACKSON (clarinet) and DANIEL THOMPSON (guitar) with special guest NEIL METCALFE (flute). The album is available here.

Nieuwe Noten – The Netherlands

NIEUWE NOTEN REVIEWS

Ben Taffijn’s NIEUWE NOTEN just reviewed our first triple CD release ‘LIVE AT PLUSETAGE, VOLUME 1’, a ‘compilation’ of 3 live label concerts at the jazz club Plus-Etage in Baarle-Nassau (The Netherlands). You can order this excellent set of concerts over here.

We beginnen opvallend ingetogen, nauwelijks hoorbare bewegingen. Nieuwe Noten – The Netherlands

STREAMS OF CONSCIOUSNESS

Streams of Consciousness is Dirk Serries‘ homage and return (after the closure of vidnaObmana in 2007) to pure harmonic sonic moments. A mix of deep ambient and drone, this collection presents a nearly 3-hour selection of tracks from the 17 releases available at: streamsofconsciousness.bandcamp.com Created in real-time on electric guitar and a handful of effects in Dirk’s home studio, it’s a slowflow inner exploration of sonics and emotional states. Single notes and reverberating washes of guitars ebb and flow throughout these long-form pieces. Begun in 2013, the first three Streams of Consciousness albums were pressed in ultra-limited quantities on vinyl. The series then continued digitally.

Some Bandcamp fan quotes:
“Ambient guitar drone at its best from none other than the best.”

“Whatever your definition of bliss is, Dirk Serries has the power to change it forever.”
“From the depths of his inner world to the ears of our sensory world, Dirk Serries is a master at the top of his game. A must have…”

“For me, Dirk Series literally walks on water. He has an amazing talent and uses it well. From his days as vidnaObmana to operating under his own name, the quality of the audio experience has always been exceptional.”

“This is one of those albums where you really begin to question what is more important, the note or the space between the notes. Perhaps it is the SOUND between the notes, the sound of the previously played note fading. Regardless, Dirk Serries paints a very gentle picture of blissful yet slightly lonely place, a place of silent introspection and reflection. Simply fantastic.”

“Sensational drones from the undisputed master of the genre.”

3 NEW RELEASES

Here at the headquarters of A NEW WAVE OF JAZZ we are extremely proud to share these 3 great new releases with you.  It’s perhaps a coincidence that these 3 new albums are predominantly made by Portuguese musicians but also not as we’ve discovered a mutual musical language that is beautifully in sync with our kind of improvisation we like on the label.  3 releases which are significantly diffferent and yet interconnected.

These 3 albums are going into pre-order TODAY March 1st and officially out on March 8th.
We are offering them for that week at a special price of only 35 EUR (incl. worldwide postage).  Go here to order.

LEMADI TRIO – TRYPTOPHAN SUITE (cd)

Our 2nd release in the Axis series, graced with the beautiful b&w photography of Martina Verhoeven, is a special one.  When José Lencastre came over last year for a recording with Dirk Serries (a pending release somewhere), we did this last-minute trio concert for the Jazzblazzt series in The Netherlands.  With Martina Verhoeven on the electric crumar piano, this trio became something else.  Tryptophan Suite represents the very first notes this new trio played together. Stars were aligned and the music flowed effortlessly in a profound conversation where each personality and instrument matters. Fresh music is rooted in ancient principles that is uplifting and deep and also nostalgic and beautiful as only life can be. Portuguese saxophonist José Lencastre’s first encounter with Belgian guitarist Dirk Serries and pianist Martina Verhoeven resulted in exquisite musical storytelling. Unique in its line-up each instrument, with each musician behind it, has room to excel and brings a beautiful melange of (free) jazz, improvisation, and avant-garde to life that is clearly their own. Check out the album here.

GARUDA TRIO + RODRIGO PINHEIRO – TONGUES OF FLAMES (cd)

Truly an honor to have these 4 exceptional artists on our label.  Hugo Costa already graced our label with his outstanding duo album with Philipp Ernsting but here with Garuda Trio he’s in company of some of the top players from the Portuguese free jazz scene : Hernãni Faustino on the bass, João Valinho on drums and the fantastic Rodrigo Pinheiro on piano. Check out the album here.

“Listen how these four move around each other, and work with volume, density, textures, iridescent atmospheres and a finale in which lava-like energy morphs into something hypnotizing. The quartet somehow merges gravity with playfulness and never settles for conventionality, putting the act of spontaneous creation front and center.” Guy Peters

CARLA SANTANA/JOSÉ LENCASTRE/MARIO do MAR/GONÇALO ALMEIDA – DEFIANT ILLUSION (cd)

And if we thought we couldn’t top a line-up, here’s this unique quartet who brings a totally different experience. While Garuda Trio with special guest Rodrigo Pinheiro musters a fine balance between classic free jazz and improvisation, this quartet dives deep into the fantastic realm of pure improvisation and textural dialogue : the electronics of Carla Santana, the subtle horn contribution of José Lencastre, Maria do Mar drawing linear lineson the viola and the ever unpredictable Gonçalo Almeida on the double bass.  When Dirk Serries was asked to master the album, it became totally clear upon first listen, that this work was a keeper and needed to be on the label.  Stellar mood music. Check out the album here.

” It’s a combination of personalities and backgrounds that could lead to a free-for-all, a wicked carnival of sounds and ideas, but never does. If anything, it’s the coherence of Defiant Illusion that impresses most of all. The music is often ominous, occasionally dense and certainly requires a serious effort from the listener, but they will be rewarded with an aural spectacle that gets richer with each successive listen.” Guy Peters

FEAR FALLS BURNING RETURNS

ROADBURN 2024 – April 21st, 2024

“For just about twenty years now, FEAR FALLS BURNING has been a creative outlet for Dirk Serries; this prolific musician has appeared at Roadburn under many guises over the years. He will return to Roadburn with Fear Falls Burning for the first time since 2019, this time to premiere new music titled The Principle Flaw.

Dirk will be joined by impressive, introspective Swedish drummer Tim Bertilsson (of the Switchblade fame) and British saxophone player Colin Webster (famous for his active role in the free improv scene and his live and recorded contributions to Idles’ repertoire). Fear Falls Burning are returning more bleak and more devastating than ever before. Stripped down to the bare essence of his own signature style of guitar playing in combination with the mighty metronome pulses of Tim on drums and the desolate howls and tonal streams of Colin on the sax, this music goes beyond and within. Dirk promises that The Principle Flaw is “an echo which will burst the ear and compromises the mind.”

We urge you to give yourselves over to Dirk’s experimental ruminations and perhaps you’ll leave this edition of Roadburn a changed person. ” – Becky Laverty
