A special day requires a special gathering. Belgian photographer and pianist Martina Verhoeven invites some of her kindred spirits and collaborative musicians, and hosts an evening of rotating configurations in the context of a full-on free impro event at Cafe Oto on Sunday July 23rd 2023. Two hours of improvisations without borders, rules and/or commitments. FREE IS THE SPACE.
Martina Verhoeven : Initially playing the fretless bass and double bass before going straight and full force on the piano. As critic Guy Peters wrote : “To Cecil Taylor, the piano itself sounded like an orchestra, and occasionally, something similar seems to be going on for Verhoeven. The piano is an instrument she inhabits, turning the 88 tuned drums into a generator for rhythm, shapes, turbulence and a sheer endless provocation of sounds and ideas.”
A prime example of high-tension free improvisation by a very energetic and unique female pianist. Her MARTINA VERHOEVEN QUINTET has received raving reviews and met a very enthusiastic audience at a full house during 2022’s ROADBURN festival in The Netherlands.
For this gathering MARTINA VERHOEVEN (piano) will be accompanied by some of the best musicians in the UK free improvisation scene, with whom she already collaborated in live (UK, Belgium, The Netherlands) and recording sessions for labels like Klanggalerie, Raw Tonk Records, Fort Fruit Evil and A New Wave Of Jazz :
ANDREW LISLE / drums BENEDICT TAYLOR / viola CATH ROBERTS / bariton saxophone CHARLOTTE KEEFFE / trumpet COLIN WEBSTER / alto saxophone DANIEL THOMPSON / acoustic guitar DIRK SERRIES / electric guitar TOM JACKSON / clarinet TOM WARD / bass clarinet, flute
This unique event will be captured by painter Gina Southgate. Well known on the London free music and jazz scene where she has painted live at gigs for 30 years. Gina works with the frisson of the music observing the relationship between the musician and instrument, to capture the energy and essence of the gig in the real time.

This incredible reissue of VIDNA OBMANA’s swansong : a trilogy of albums inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Inferno poems which originally was released on the legendary metal label RELAPSE RECORDS / RELEASE ENTERTAINMENT got the ZOHARUM treatment with this fine reissue, fully remastered and with the breathtaking photography by Martina Verhoeven. Belgium’ SIDE-LINE magazine just reviewed this 3 CD set and gave it a 8/10 rating ! Get your copy here.
Background/Info: Polish Zoharum label moves on re-releasing albums from Vidna Obmana’s back catalog. Belgian artist Dirk Serries started this legendary project in the 80s and the “Dante Trilogy” belongs to the latest productions of the project. “Tremor” 2001), “Spore” (2002) and “Legacy” (2002) were originally released as separate albums by Relapse Records. Zoharum brings this trilogy now together in a massive, single, and remastered, work.
Content: There clearly is a connection between the 3 records. The albums can be described as an offspring between Dark-Ambient and Cinematic music with Tribal rhythms on top. Serries mixed electronics together with real instruments like overtune flutes, percussion, guitar, ebow harmonics, dreampipe ao. Several guest artists also contributed to a few tracks on the different albums. One of the most renowned artists was Marc Verhaeghen (The Klinik) who played trumpet on a song featured at “Spore”.
+ + + : This trilogy remains to me the most accessible and best work ever composed by Vidna Obmana. The artist composed a very unique sound experience which you can’t compare to any other artist. He brought genres together creating his own style and sound DNA. The slow rhythms definitely inject something special while the mysterious atmospheres created by overtone flutes were just like the red line throughout this trilogy. Sometimes anguishing and characterized by a strongly inhibited approach this work still sounds accurate today. It’s really great to see this trilogy being released as one album featuring a great, artistic, digipak. Zoharum did a great work on this.
– – – : The single reproach I would make is the rather repetitive and predictable sound which comes true after a while.
Conclusion: Back to the mysterious sound of Vidna Obmana which found its apotheosis by this magic, conceptual, trilogy.
Best songs: “Mindtunnel”, “The Seeker And The Spell” + Skin Strip”, “Beyond The Shaman”, “Resonant Gore” + “Bloodshift”.
A nice review on the JAZZ & MO website, courtesy of Guy Peters. The album is available through our bandcamp store.
Jazz&Mo – Belgium
MOORS MAGAZINE (The Netherlands) just reviewed our recent release : LIVE AT PLUS-ETAGE VOLUME 1. They divided the review in 3 parts, each review dedicated to one of the 3 discs / concerts. The release is of course available from our bandcamp store.
Moors Magazine – The Netherlands
“New Wave of Jazz betekent geïmproviseerde muziek, muziek voor avontuurlijke luisteraars.
Mooi.” Moors Magazine – The Netherlands
Moors Magazine – The Netherlands
DIRK SERRIES will do a last-minute added SOLO AMBIENT concert at the STRUPPIGTANZEN concert event series (KAW/Kulturausbesserungswerk) in Leverkusen, (Germany) on June 30th, 2023.
VITAL WEEKLY (The Netherlands) is first with their review of our most recent release : LIVE AT PLUS-ETAGE VOLUME 1. A 3CD set that brings together 3 beautiful live label events, held at jazzvenue PlusEtage. This 3xCD set is available from our bandcamp store.
“Two duos and one trio took the stage at Plus Etage in Baarle-Nassau, The Netherlands; however, much to my surprise, on three different, non-consecutive nights. I had not heard of this stage, but I don’t move around in free improvisation circles; I know very little about free improvisation, so I am a mere amateur reviewer. This new triple CD package sees a change in cover design, and this time there are no liner notes by Guy Peters. On the first disc, we find a recording from April 29, 2022, by Charlotte Keeffe on trumpet and flugelhorn and Andrew Lisle on drums. The latter is no stranger to this label. Keeffe’s name also turned up a few times, playing with various musicians, such as Deludium Skies, Day Evans Dale Ensemble and Kodian Plus. There are two lengthy cuts on this disc, with a relatively traditional free improvisation, free jazz approach. The instruments are recognizable, and the two have a lively interaction. For most of the fifty minutes, the energy levels are pretty up, and there is great action and reaction between the two players. Only, occasionally they seem to ‘lose’ it, or, instead, they pull back and shift into a slower gear, finding a new place to start and get the ball rolling. I am sure it isn’t easy to keep a high energy level going for a long time. For all I know, this is part of the process—a refined work. The second is the trio recording from September 30, 2022. On stage label boss Dirk Serries (archtop guitar), Benedict Taylor (viola) and Stefan Keune (sopranino saxophone). Here too, Keune is, for me, a relatively new name. His name only came up once, albeit also on this label. Maybe it is the nature of the instruments, but the music sounds ‘smaller’, even when this trio displays great hecticness in playing the instruments. Not exclusively, but there is a lot of scratching and scraping of instruments, and lots of small notes fly around like shards, falling and tumbling around. Also, on this disc, there are two lengthy pieces of music (ten minutes more than on the first disc), which is quite an exhausting experience (and, mind you, I didn’t play this release in one go; I spread it over three days). More than on the first disc, the energy levels were way up, the sound even more fragmented, and I needed a short break when the music was over. The final disc was recorded two months after the second disc and had a duo of Martina Verhoeven and Goncalo Almeida. They both play the double bass, which, I believe, is a first for Verhoeven. She usually plays the piano, but this is not the first time this label sees musicians switching instruments – “I never played this instrument, so I think I can”. At forty-two minutes, this disc is the shortest in this package. While not free of some nervous and hectic, there isn’t the same level of energy, which (and I am thinking here of the listener who goes for the experience of playing all of these in a row) makes, perhaps, a good moment to relax, a bit, because it’s not always the most reflective music. It is, so I guess, within the nature of the instrument used. The low end of the bass plays a role here. Interestingly they also use small bells at one point, and I believe I also heard voices. I might be wrong. Quieter at times but still very much the work of free improvisation and another fine work with some significant interaction between these two players. ” Vital Weekly – The Netherlands
Here’s some extra photos, captured by PlusEtage photographer Marcel Thomassen of the fantastic concert MARTINA VERHOEVEN & TEUN VERBRUGGEN put on last Saturday at our 7th label event at the intimate PlusEtage in Baarle-Nassau (The Netherlands). Thank you Marcel.
In tropical temperatures, for our 7th label event at PlusEtage, MARTINA VERHOEVEN & TEUN VERBRUGGEN challenged each other musically yesterday and raised the intensity even more. Absolutely blazing concert and Ella & Eddy Westveer of JAZZRADAR were there and were so kind to capture not only the fantastic performance with beautiful photography but also wrote a superb review. Thank you.
Live at Plus-Etage Volume 1.
Go with the flow.
Stilte! Daarna een dankbaar applaus!

Tomorrow, our 7th label/PlusEtage event, is MARTINA VERHOEVEN (piano) and TEUN VERBRUGGEN (drums)’ change to shine on the stage of PlusEtage in Baarle-Nassau (The Netherlands). Join us.
The extraordinary Polish webzine, from the mind of Andrzej Nowak, just wrote a beautiful article on DIRK SERRIES recent albums : two solo’s : FLUCTUATION OF BEING and NOCTURNAL DISCORD, and his collaboration with JUSTIN K BROADRICK : LOUD AS GIANTS.
Dirk Serries! Back to the dark!
Ladies and gentlemen, Dirk Serries in dark zone! Welcome!
Dirk Serries Fluctuation Of Being (Midira Records, CD 2023). Nagrane w różnych okolicznościach, 2019 – 2022: Dirk Serries – gitara elektryczna i efekty. Pięć utworów, 55 minut.
Fluktuacja bytu, to niemal klasyczna pozycja w dark ambientowym portfolio Belga. Gitarowe pasaże od lewej do prawej, od nieistniejących narodzin do zapomnianego bezkońca. Nagrania powstałe w trakcie czterech lat brzmią bliźniaczo, pięknie kołyszą nas egzystencjalną trwogą i wszechobecnym smutkiem. Tytuły utworów pełne są niemal metafizycznej pustki, zapewne obrazują dźwiękiem czasy covidowej beznadziei. Piękny album wprost do galerii wzorca gatunku!
Dirk Serries Nocturnal Discord (Cloudchamber Records, Kaseta/DL 2023). Nagrane w czasie rzeczywistym, studio domowe, styczeń 2023: Dirk Serries – gitara elektryczna i efekty. Pięć utworów, 49 minut.
Druga z solowych nowości gitarzysty powstała w czasie rzeczywistym, z czego wnosić można, iż jest realnym zapisem procesu twórczego bez specjalnych ingerencji post-produkcyjnych. Nagrana na raz i udostępniona w formie pięciu improwizacji, budowanych surowym brzmieniem gitary elektrycznej, szumem gitarowych pick-upów, nasączona brudem analogowej metody realizacji. Nowy, ciekawy wątek w twórczości muzyka, silniej osadzony w żywych dźwiękach, poniekąd nawiązujący do gitarowego projektu życia artysty, czyli Fear Falls Burning.
Dużej w niej szorstkich, męskich zapachów i siermiężnej subtelności. W czwartej opowieści przywołane wyżej charakterystyki zdają się nasilać. Całość przypomina elegię na śmierć ambientu. Finałowa opowieść znów brzmi organowo, tworzą ją mgławice dźwiękowych plam z wolna umierającej gitary.
Loud As Giants Empty Homes (Consouling Sounds, CD 2023). Czas i miejsce akcji nieznane (jakkolwiek pandemiczne): Justin K. Broadrick oraz Dirk Serries – wszystkie instrumenty, żywe i syntetyczne. Cztery utwory, 45 minut.
Jeśli we współczesnym dorobku artystycznym Serriesa mielibyśmy szukać pozycji o największym potencjale … komercyjnym, to popełnilibyśmy błąd najmniejszy wskazując na nagranie Empty Homes!
W kolejnej opowieści mamy podobny schemat, ale rozwinięcie wątku gitarowego idzie tu w masę i brzmi niczym klasyczne riffy Black Sabbath. Całość niesiona jest pasmem basowym o zdecydowanie syntetycznym brzmieniu. W trzeciej części ambient otwarcia wydaje się bardziej mglisty, z kolei gitarowy wątek główny przypomina nasączone silnym echem produkcje Cocteau Twins, odgrywane wszakże tuż przed nuklearnym atakiem wroga. Beat utworu dość szybko przyobleka tu szaty drum’n’bass.
