NEW RELEASES

April is the month of several DIRK SERRIES-related releases. This is what you can expect, pre-order and immediately order.

DIRK SERRIES – NOCTURNAL DISCORD (cassette, Cloudchamber Recordings)

NOCTURNAL DISCORD is the next phase in DIRK SERRIES’ long running ambient trajectory. Known since the early eighties for his trademark ambient music under the VIDNA OBMANA pseudonym, Dirk now boldly crosses into new territory creating a willful, eccentric and new album that still holds ingredients from his past but incorporates new elements. Still executed on the electric guitar in combination with an array of stunning pedal effects, treatment and processing, recorded straight to stereo. NOCTURNAL DISCORD is a nightly excursion into darker, more abstract and stranger timbres. 5 weeping songs that are melancholic, alienating, intense and soothing at the same time. An album that is definitely its own and shows the craftsmanship of Dirk and his strong ongoing pursuit to cover new terrain, challenge himself and to make once again a statement as one of the most innovative and adventurous modern musicians. NOCTURNAL DISCORD is also his debut for Cloudchamber Recordings.

This album is released on cassette in a very limited run of 40 copies !  Order directly from us here:

DIRK SERRIES – FLUCTUATION OF BEING (cd, Midira Records)

Dirk Serries returns to MIDIRA RECORDS with his first solo album in our catalogue, after working together with us quite frequently on collaboration records.

“Fluctuation Of Being” is the first solo ambient album by Dirk Serries since his critically-acclaimed last solo record “Epitaph” in 2018. The album is a continuation of his trademark “vintage” ambience on the electric guitar, performed and recorded in real-time with the help of a handful of pedal effects.

The album comes in an offset printed 4 panel digisleeve with matte finish and is limited to 250 copies and features the breathtaking photography of MARTINA VERHOEVEN.

Dirk Serries about the album:
“Cycles of tonal phrases, washes of guitar drowned in a vast sea of sustain to create a surreal sonic mood to dwell in on repeat.”

You can pre-order the album directly from the label MIDIRA RECORDS here.  The CD itself will be available at the day of the MOVING NOISES festival, April 22nd 2023 where Dirk Serries will perform a solo ambient set.

LOUD AS GIANTS – EMPTY HOMES (cd & lp, Consouling Sounds)

Talking about the nature of Loud As Giants, Dirk Serries marks that for both him and Justin K. Broadrick the project is more like ‘a trip down memory lane.’ Thirteen years after their collaboration as Fear Falls Burning and Final, these two kindred spirits return with an album that symbolizes their mutual fascination for the 80’s culture in which they grew up and all the relevant and groundbreaking genres Justin and Dirk were influenced by.

“LOUD AS GIANTS is our collaboration not to invent new music but just to bring together the music we grew up with, were/are inspired by and we just like to do ourselves.” – explains Dirk talking about his creative partnership with Broadrick: “So the appreciation has been there since the beginning, and I also think this is the foundation of our collaboration.”

While been musically in sync since the early eighties when they both were active in the underground cassette network. Both with the highest appreciation for each other’s work for almost two decades, they finally met during a joined tour where Serries, as Fear Falls Burning, supported JESU. Justin comments on the beginning of the long partnership with Serries saying: “We had the concept of this project on the back burner for some years. It’s taken some time for it to take shape, but now we feel the time is right, and we have the right record in place.”

Pandemic, the isolation and global nostalgia became crucial factors that affected both artists carefully uniting together the release that became ‘Empty Homes’. “I love isolation, but only when chosen by me, but I love the night, again, empty streets, quiet, I feel like I can exist then. I hate mornings; I hate low sunlight. It immediately depresses me. This album for me embodies a world I personally feel happier in.” – explains Broadrick talking about a dream-like state, far from busyness of big cities and overcrowded streets. While the image of empty homes united the musical and esthetic part reflected in the music: “Homes fascinate me; the rooms we dwell in and spend our existences in, I can’t quite compute it nor articulate it, but I feel it’s all full of loss and emptiness…”

‘Empty Homes’ the debut release from LOUD AS GIANTS is coming out this April, 28th via Consouling Sounds. Pre-order the LP via the website of the label (CD/ LP).

VIDNA OBMANA – DANTE TRILOY : TREMOR, SPORE, LEGACY (3xcd, Zoharum)

In his 25 year existency as VIDNA OBMANA Dirk Serries never shied away from challenges, sometimes to the regret of many of his fans, but it’s when he was offered a record deal with the renowned metal label RELAPSE RECORDS/RELEASE ENTERTAINMENT Vidna Obmana took his boldest step ever. With his DANTE TRILOGY he created his most ambitious, daring and unique set of albums which, for good, made him to be one of the most unique voices in the ambient and experimental scene.

Not only brought he VIDNA OBMANA to a definite conclusion but executed for him that perfect fusion of everything his project stood for since the first release in 1984.
His industrialism, the minimal ambience, the fourth world explorations and his electronic processing experiments went into blender. Utterly surreal, intense and expansive, the 3 albums TREMOR, SPORE and LEGACY showcase VIDNA OBMANA at his creative peak while conceptually the trilogy expresses Dirk Serries’ frustration, disappointment and creative turmoil as his role as VIDNA OBMANA in the ambient scene. This trilogy became that end of the road for probably his most critically-acclaimed and world-wide appreciated project but a change was necessary.
Having these 3 albums out on RELAPSE RECORDS/RELEASE ENTERTAINMENT solidified his connection to the metal and heavier guitar scene and the next chapter in DIRK SERRIES’ obsessive quest for that sublime in sound and mood was born: FEAR FALLS BURNING.

Now fully remastered, making every complex detail stand out even more, ZOHARUMis releasing the trilogy as a 3CD set with the related breathtaking photography by MARTINA VERHOEVEN. Music that according to VIDNA OBMANA was especially recorded to experience on a qualitive set of headphones.

KODIAN PLUS

KODIAN PLUS continues to receive very positive reviews. Here’s one on the fantastic SPONTANEOUS MUSIC TRIBUNE of Andrzej Nowak. Meanwhile also Fred Kellogg featured the DISENGAGE album on his outstanding ‘Free Jazz With Fred’. The link to that show is here.
The album itself you can still order from our store.

“Belgijsko-brytyjskie Kodian Trio to jedna z najciekawszych formacji współczesnej sceny free jazzowej w Europie. Najnowszy zatem album tytułuje się nazwą własną Kodian Plus, a do kwintetu gitarzysta Dirk Serries, saksofonista Colin Webster i perkusista Andrew Lisle dobrali sobie pianistkę Martinę Verhoeven i trębaczkę Charlotte Keeffe. Kwintowy pociąg zdecydowanie rusza z miejsca w trakcie siódmej minuty, gdy gitara z pozycji ambientu wchodzi w tryb niemal jazzrockowej kipieli. Trzecią opowieść zaczyna perkusista, do którego dość szybko dołącza alcista. Korzenny duet szybko stanowi tu prawa i obowiązki stron! A zatem restart – z mroku ciszy i rezonansu! Potok filigranowych short-cuts kreuje teraz urokliwy suspens. Spontaneous Music Tribune – Poland

KODIAN PLUS – DISENGAGE

NIEUWE NOTEN just reviewed our brandnew release of KODIAN PLUS. Read it here below. The album is of course available from our bandcamp store.

QUARTET REVIEW

Yesterday evening the quartet of PATRICK DE GROOTE (trumpet, flugelhorn), ONNO GOVAERT (drums), DIRK SERRIES (guitar), and MARTINA VERHOEVEN (double bass, piano) played a two-set concert at PlusEtage (Baarle-Nassau, The Netherlands) and Nieuwe Noten was there and wrote this review (in Dutch) :

NEW REVIEWS

The first reviews of KODIAN PLUS – DISENGAGE are dripping in and so it’s another one of HUGO COSTA & PHILIPP ERNSTING’s THE ART OF CRASHING, courtesy of MOORS MAGAZINE and VITAL WEEKLY.
Naturally the releases are still available through our bandcamp store.

“There are a few genres of music that I wouldn’t say that I am a big fan of (anymore!), but of which I can handle a few releases a week. Noise is one such genre, and free jazz, perhaps, another. Whereas noise I could go to a few, with free jazz, I’d like to limit it to one or two a week. Especially when it comes with force such as Kodian Plus delivers. Kodian Trio, without Plus, is a trio of Colin Webster (alto saxophone), Andrew Lisle (drums), and Dirk Serries (electric guitar), with the addition of Charlotte Keeffe (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Marine Verhoeven (piano). It becomes quite the power quintet. In March last year, they made a recording in the Sunny Side Inc. studio in Anderlecht, a forty-two-minute sound explosion. Not always the wild ride you may expect this kind of free jazz to be, as it comes with that tension underneath, such as in the opening of the first piece, ‘Latching Effect’. But a piece such as ‘Caurous’ is full of chaos but is captured with great clarity. You follow what the drums are doing, then play it again and concentrate on the piano or wind instruments. What helps is that all instruments sound as you’d expect them to sound (which one could also see as a disadvantage; no further exploration of the sound qualities was done), making it easier to follow. It is not easy to say if the interaction is great; sure, it surely is in the group’s quieter moments, but in the chaos, the dialogue may be lost a bit. As a non-expert and not the biggest fan of the genre, I’d recommend this one if you want to dip in the water of free jazz.” Vital Weekly – The Netherlands

Moors Magazine – The Netherlands

Moors Magazine – The Netherlands

REGENERATION

Despite his prolific ambient period in the eighties and nineties, with a huge back catalogue of music and several tours in Europe and the United States, Dirk Serries never played his solo ambient music live on UK soil.  Until November last year when he played a solo ambient concert at his favorite place in London : Hundred Years Gallery.

Through his experience in the free improvisation Dirk transformed his solo ambient music, originally constructed melticulously by writing strict motives before performing, to being able to improvise 200% and still create his trademark ambient music for which he is recognized worldwide.  Now released on HUNDRED YEARS GALLERY’s home label in a very limited run of 50 copies ! DANDELION REVIEWED

UK’s MUSIQUE MACHINE just reviewed our latest release DANDELION by Jackson/Serries/Vanderstraeten.
Read the 3 out of 5 rated review here below. The cd is available from our bandcamp store.

“3 out of 5 rating. Dandelion is a five-track improv release that rewardingly shifts from the darting & playful, onto the lightly seared and moody, through to the manic & rather wacky. The release features the trio of Tom Jackson- Clarinet, Dirk Serries- acoustic guitar, and Kris Vanderstraeten- Percussion/ Drums.
The release comes in the form of a CD release on Antwerpen’s A New Wave Of Jazz- who focuses on the more difficult, abstract, and noise-bound side of the improv/ modern composition genres. The CD comes presented in labels house style grey & white mini gatefold- which features on its outside grey boxes and white texts, and inside a write-up about the trio & the track presented here. This release is Ltd to just 200 copies. Of the trio I was already aware of Mr Serries- since the mid-’80s this Belgian’s career has shifted from the ambient/experimental stylings of his Vidna Obmana project, onto the more improv-focused work of his solo/ collaborative release. I also knew Londoner Tom Jackson, after hearing his intense duelling horn improv release The Other Lies( with saxophonist Collin Webster)- released on New Wave Of Jazz in 2022. I wasn’t familiar with Kris Vanderstraeten work, but after a search, I find out he’s been active in the Belgian free improv scene since the 1970s- with around twenty releases to his name. The five tracks featured here have runtimes between four and eleven minutes a piece. We open with “Carnation Pink” which goes from low-key warbles, creaks, and neck scrambles. Onto a more playful blend of rapid percussive dart ‘n’ fumble, jiving strums, and flighty flute ‘n’ wails. We have the wacky fiddling ‘n’ forking of “Violet Blue” which finds exuberant horn weaves, meeting guitar twangs ‘n’ scrubs, and generally shifting percussive playfulness. In the second half of the record, we have ”Dark Green” which shifts from low-key scrapes, whistles, and dragging hisses. Though to a more lively mix of mischievous honks, guitar pluck ‘n’ saw, and tip-top percussive shifts. Onto a more haunting, and almost ritual refrain. With the album been finished off with the manic slapstick feel of “Bright Yellow” which begins all detailed percussive darts, neck scrubs ‘n’ bays, and tightly constricted horn darts….though later on dips into slightly more forlorn waters, with stretched warbling honks, winding to tip-toping percussion runs, and choppy strums.

Dandelion is another mighty fine example of adventurous, at points manic & seared improv from the folks at A New Wave Of Jazz. With all three players really work wonderfully together to create a selection of unpredictable & searingly vibrant improv.” Musique Machine – UK

THE TAPE REVIEWED

Andrzej Nowak’ SPONTANEOUS MUSIC TRIBUNE does it again. In his imaginative Polish native language he just reviewed DUNNING/TAYLOR/THOMPSON’s cassette release ‘THE TAPE’. Excellent.
THE TAPE is still available from our store, limited to 60 copies so don’t wait too long.

W kategorii brytyjskich improwizatorów średniego pokolenia, The Tape to niemal spotkanie na szczycie! Świetnie nam znani mistrzowie minimalistycznej akustyki, Taylor i Thompson, spotykają tu Dunninga, mistrza nieoczywistych konfiguracji nieakustycznych. Muzycy bez trudu łapią porozumienie i kreują coraz bardziej intrygujące sytuacje sceniczne. W okolicach 25 minuty flow gaśnie aż do poziomu ciszy. Nowe wątki są teraz wyjątkowo filigranowe, choć maszyneria Dunninga przypominać zaczyna swoje bardziej głośne oblicze, znane z początku koncertu. Zakończenie spektaklu przychodzi wyjątkowe nagle, jakby ktoś przez przypadek zgasił światło.” Spontaneous Music Tribune – Poland
