Dutch magazine MOORS MAGAZINE just published their review of LEMADI TRIO’s TRYPTOPHAN SUITE release and it’s very good. The album is available through our bandcamp store.

“Het Lemadi Trio speelde op 1 mei 2023 voor het eerst samen, en dat op een tamelijk ongewone plek, namelijk in een garage in het Limburgse dorp Neeritter, waar regelmatig concerten worden gehouden in het kader van Jazzblazzt. Het is een ruimte waar maar een zeer beperkt publiek in kan (wij hebben er ooit Spinifex zien optreden) maar dat op een merkwaardige manier zeer inspirerend blijkt te zijn.

De Portugese saxofonist José Lencastre speelde samen met de Belgische gitarist Dirk Serries en pianiste Martina Verhoeven, die dit keer speelde op de elektrische cunar piano. Improvisatie, free jazz, avant-garde, noem het wat je wil, het is gewoon een kwestie van die virtuoze musici die het heerlijk vinden om samen muzikaal op avontuur te gaan. En als luisteraar mag je meegenieten, want er zijn opnames gemaakt, waardoor het debuutalbum van het Lemadi Trio een feit is.

In 2024 gaan de drie op tournee, en als je dit album, Tryptophan Suite,  gehoord hebt wil je een concert bij jou in de buurt absoluut niet missen, lijkt me. Het album is spannend van begin tot eind, met fluisterzachte passages en wilde stukken, en altijd goed tot meesterlijk. En, wat ik verbazingwekkend vind aan dit soort geïmproviseerde muziek, hij wordt bij elke draaibeurt beter – er werd dus blijkbaar zo geconcentreerd gespeeld dat er veel binnen dat kleine uur bij elkaar kwam dat enige tijd nodig heeft om door de luisteraar weer ontrafeld te worden. Geen muziek voor luie luisteraars, maar als je hier met open oren voor gaat zitten word je rijkelijk beloond.”

“From the next release, with four players, I only heard of Goncalo Almeida (double bass) before. The other players are Carla Santana (electronics), Josè Lencastre (alto and tenor sax), and Maria do Mar (violin). They recorded eight pieces in a studio in Abóboda in October 2022. Spoiler alert: the Portuguese connection continues. This is more what I expect from A New Wave Of Jazz; it’s improvised music, which goes without saying, but by adding, for instance, electronics as an oddball, Here too, the saxophone plays a reasonably traditional role, just as the other instruments; again, there is nothing of that ‘my instrument is an object’ approach with these musicians. The contrast between the electronic side and the acoustic works quite well; the latter platy, at times, small melodic phrases, maybe as to mark a difference between the more abstract electronic side. I don’t know what these electronics are, but my best guess would be modular electronics. Sometimes, everybody leans towards a more abstract side, with carefully bending strings, small notes, and sparsely scattered silence. Throughout, the music sounds very controlled and quiet. It’s not easy to say this is because everyone is looking at each other, afraid to disturb the controlled music, maybe too restricted, but it can also be their intention to play the music in this controlled manner. This works quite well in a piece called ‘The Way Of Zen’ (perhaps an easy title). The hectic and chaos that sometimes comes with improvised music is also part of this, but it somehow works well.” Vital Weekly – The Netherlands

“While playing the CD by the Garuda Trio and Rodrigo Pinheiro, few can be classified as ‘jazz’ releases despite the label bearing the name jazz. The big disclaimer is, of course, that I am not an expert by any standard. I have to take such matters at face value, or as much I believe them to be. The trio’s lineup is Hugo Costa (alto saxophone), Hernani Faustino (double bass) and Joao Valinho (drums), guested by Rodrigo Pinheiro on piano. That already means ‘a jazz line up’, even when the result is more free jazz than trad jazz. However, again, warning: novices are piping an opinion, and their approach is also traditional in the free tradition. Each instrument sounds as expected, and while the 39 minutes are chaotic, playing these instruments is reasonably traditional. The three pieces were recorded in a studio in Lisbon in July 2022, and I am still determining how much of this is ‘live’ and how much is ‘edited’. What I found particularly noteworthy is that the saxophone is the instrument that is most up front, and the drums are relatively low in the mix. I wish that would have been different. Stylistically, this is the kind of music I have the most difficulty with; as a reviewer, it is complicated to review (see above), and as a listener, I can appreciate and enjoy the music’s raw energy.” Vital Weekly – The Netherlands

“Labelboss Dirk Serries plays (electric) guitar with the Lemadi trio. Le as in Jose Lencastre (alto sax), Ma as Martine Verhoeven (crumar piano) and Di for Dirk. They performed together for the first time on May 1st, 2023, at Jazzblazzt in Neeritter, The Netherlands, and the results were of such a kind that a release was needed. There are two pieces on this CD, spanning 51 minutes of music, so, the entire recording of that day. They lean towards the first CD I reviewed here by Serries’ label, with a dominant role for the saxophone, although it isn’t among the wind instruments I love most. That’s a pity, as I especially like what Verhoeven is doing here on the electric Crumar piano. Her tones are light, like snowflakes, with the possibility to change the tone. Serries knows how to isolate guitar tones, unlike snowflakes, but unspecified events and short attacks on isolated strings. This makes for a significant interaction, which I enjoyed very much, even in their most free jazz moments. But the omnipresence of the wailing saxophone is too much at times. When all three decide to go for an all-chaotic blast, it works fine; that’s where I enjoy saxophones best, which is the same in this case. It’s not babad, but it’s too much for me at times.” Vital Weekly – The Netherlands

“Dirk Serries voelt zich meer dan thuis in de Londense impro scene. Dat bewijzen zijn samenwerkingen wel waar we de afgelopen twee dagen aandacht aan besteedden. Meer en meer wordt zijn label New Wave of Jazz een belangrijk vehikel om ook in onze contreien deze muziek onder de aandacht te brengen. Zo verschenen onlangs onder de titel ‘Hunt at the Brook Again’ opnames van een concert dat klarinettist Tom Jackson, altviolist Benedict Taylor en gitarist Daniel Thompson gaven in april 2019 in Stanford Brook, Londen. Een maand later trad het trio er wederom aan, nu met fluitist Neil Metcalfe, de opnames belandden op de tweede schijf, onder de titel ‘Hunt at the Brook with Neil Metcalfe’. Het is Jackson die we als eerste horen met een paar springende noten, al snel gevolgd door het snarenspel van Taylor en Thompson. Al snel buitelen de klanken over elkaar heen. Een vrij korte improvisatie waarin dynamiek een grote rol speelt. In de tweede improvisatie gaat het er geheel anders aan toe, daar creëren de drie aanvankelijk intieme klanknevels. De spanning loopt verderop echter op, waarbij vooral het samenspel tussen klarinet en gitaar opvalt. Opmerkelijk is ook die vrij hectische frase tegen het einde van dit tweede deel, als een waterval klinkt het hier. Het zijn Thompson en Taylor die we het eerst horen in de derde improvisatie, verderop subtiel ondersteund door Jackson. En ook hier loopt al snel de spanning op: schurende snaren en een alle kanten op schietende klarinetklank. Bijzonder ook hoe in dit deel de dynamische frases worden afgewisseld met bijzonder ingetogen momenten, soms nauwelijks hoorbaar. In het vierde deel overheerst weer de dynamiek, vaak met een opvallend gruizig karakter, met name door de bijdrages van Thompson. Maar hier vinden we ook een bijzonder duet van Jackson met zo te horen Taylor, of we in een nachtelijk bos zijn beland. Na een opvallend intiem begin, de eerste minuut horen we nauwelijks iets, vinden we verderop in de vijfde improvisatie één van de meest hectische momenten van deze set. De zesde improvisatie valt op door het toonzettende spel van Jackson, de snaren spelen hier duidelijk een begeleidende rol. Het tweede concert is opgeknipt in vier delen. De eerste begint opvallend gelijkmatig, met mooi laag van Jackson en de snaren in de begeleiding. Metcalfe komt erbij, de tweede stem. Ietwat slepend, maar melodieus. Tot ook hier de abstractie het overneemt. Bijzonder klinken hier verderop ook de combinatie klarinet en fluit, volledig vallen de klanken samen en die van gitaar en altviool. Fluit en klarinet bepalen ook het klankbeeld aan het begin van de tweede improvisatie, met Thompson en Taylor als begeleiders. Dan is het nog rustig, verderop neemt de dynamiek toe en wordt er gespeeld op scherp van de snede. In de derde improvisatie gaat het er weer opvallend melodieus aan toe, met bijzonder fraaie klanken van Jackson en Metcalfe. Een bijzonder speelse improvisatie, dit derde deel. Ook in het vierde deel valt het melodische karakter op, het maakt dit concert tot een minder abstracte exercitie dan die van april.” Nieuwe Noten – The Netherlands

Ben Taffijn’s NIEUWE NOTEN just reviewed our first triple CD release ‘LIVE AT PLUSETAGE, VOLUME 1’, a ‘compilation’ of 3 live label concerts at the jazz club Plus-Etage in Baarle-Nassau (The Netherlands). You can order this excellent set of concerts over here.

“Naast actief musicus is Dirk Serries de laatste jaren ook actief als labelbaas en concertorganisator. Die beide activiteiten komen mooi samen op het enige maanden geleden verschenen ‘Live at Plus-Etage, Volume 1’, met daarop de registraties van een drietal concerten die Serries in 2022 organiseerde in de Plus-Etage, nog één van de weinige podia in Nederland voor het échte experiment. Van twee van de drie concerten deed ik eerder verslag, de derde is ook voor mij nieuw. Cd 1 bevat het optreden van Charlotte Keeffe en Andrew Lisle; op Cd 2 horen we Stefan Keune, Benedict Taylor en Serries zelf en tot slot op Cd 3 het treffen tussen Martina Verhoeven en Gonçalo Almeida.
Op 29 april 2022 speelde trompettiste Charlotte Keeffe met drummer Andrew Lisle, Britse musici waar Serries ook regelmatig mee samenspeelt. Maar het tekent deze man dat hij niet altijd zelf ook op het podium wil staan en deze twee daarom nu eens met elkaar liet spelen. Het was een memorabel optreden waar ik mij toen ook al reeds enthousiast over betoonde. Gelukkig kunnen we het allemaal nu dus nog eens terughoren. Lisle begint met ritmisch spel waar Keeffe, zoals ik ook teruglees in mijn eerdere recensie, op bijzondere wijze, eveneens percussief, bij aansluit. Een wat vreemde, gemankeerde melodie volgt, tegen Lisle’s meeslepende slagwerk. Er was duidelijk een klik tussen de twee, zoals ik al eerder benoemde, iets wat we ook goed terughoren op deze opnames.
Het concert van Keune, Taylor en Serries, op 30 september 2022, heb ik gemist. Het zijn Serries en altviolist Taylor die beginnen, al snel gevolgd door Keune op de sopranino sax. Bijzonder experimenteel spel ontvouwt zich, elkaar aftastend, zoals dat hoort bij vrije improvisatie. Taylor en Serries spelen de laatste jaren vaker samen, de komende dagen zal er van deze twee hier meer voorbij komen, iets wat we hier ook goed horen, terwijl ik mij niet kan herinneren Serries eerder met Keune gehoord te hebben. Veel uitmaken doet het niet, de drie voelen zich prima thuis op dit podium en de klanken vloeien op prachtige wijze in elkaar over, zeker in die dynamische frase halverwege de eerste set. De tweede set wordt geopend door Keune en die prachtige klanken van de sopranino. Piepend als een kleine muis vult zijn geluid de ruimte, tot de stroeve klanken van Serries en Taylor op zijn pad komen en ze samen verder trekken. En ook verderop vinden we dat typische geluid van de sopranino volop terug.
Verhoeven en Almeida, beiden op contrabas, ontmoetten elkaar voor één set op 25 november van datzelfde jaar. De andere set bestond uit een duet tussen altsaxofonist Hugo Costa en drummer Philipp Ernsting, niet aanwezig op dit album. Ook over dit concert schreef ik eerder. We beginnen opvallend ingetogen, nauwelijks hoorbare bewegingen. Dan horen we de regelmatige streken van Verhoeven en de variaties die Almeida daarop creëert, verderop culminerend in ritmisch samenspel. Een boeiend treffen waarin het experiment een grote rol speelt en waarin weer eens opvalt hoe groot de klankrijkdom is van dit boeiende instrument.” Nieuwe Noten – The Netherlands
