One of our frequent collaborators and participants to the label story is the brilliant saxophonist COLIN WEBSTER. This month he’s teaming up with his longtime drummer MARK HOLUB and NOAH PUNKT (double bass) for a fine series of concerts. Catch them live at one of these dates.
On May 6th we released DIRK SERRIES’ 2nd and third volume of his solo acoustic guitar series on vinyl. A double vinyl in the trademark design of Rutger Zuydervelt and with of course the impeccable liner notes of Guy Peters. The 2xLP is now available through bandcamp.

Tonight A New Wave Of Jazz in conjunction with the city of Brecht hosts an unique quintet event at the beautiful chapel of the old monastery in Brecht. The reverberant character of the chapel will be the conductor of this free improvised concert making the musicians interact meticulously with the acoustics of this old room. Join us. Last Friday we had the pleasure to welcome CHARLOTTE KEEFFE (trumpet, flugelhorn) and ANDREW LISLE (drums) to our two-monthly label event, in conjuction with, at PlusEtage (Baarle-Nassau, NL). NIEUWE NOTEN wrote a lovely review on this.
“Dirk Serries’ A New Wave of Jazz is meer dan een platenlabel, het is ook een platform voor het promoten van vrije improvisatie in België en Nederland. Zo organiseert Serries dit voorjaar een aantal concerten in de PlusEtage, één van de weinige podia die dit soort muziek nog durft te programmeren. Serries onderhoudt warme banden met de Londense impro-scene, zo bleek ook gisterenavond weer. Drummer Andrew Lisle kent hij inmiddels vrij goed, ze zitten samen in het Kodian Trio, trompettiste Charlotte Keeffe nog een stuk minder. Samen kozen ze gisterenavond het ruime sop.
Het spannende van vrije improvisatie in duo verband is dat je als musicus continu alert moet zijn. Natuurlijk mag de ander soms best even solo gaan, iets dat ook hier zeker gebeurde, maar nooit te lang. Met andere woorden: meer dan in welke andere samenstelling moeten de musici elkaar een beetje liggen, moeten ze er lol in hebben met elkaar te musiceren, samen op reis te gaan. Als dat het geval is, kan het tot een mooie set leiden. De twee keer een half uur van gisteren, het is duidelijk intensief zo als duo, voldeed gelukkig geheel aan deze criteria. Aan alles was te merken dat Keeffe en Lisle niet voor het eerst met elkaar op het podium stonden, ze kennen elkaars wijze van musiceren, elkaars gewoontes. En ondanks dat een drumstel enerzijds en een trompet en bugel anderzijds, volledig andere instrumenten zijn, kwamen de klanken vaak opvallend dicht bij elkaar, zeker toen Keeffe, bijvoorbeeld in een vrij lange passage aan het begin van de eerste set, haar trompet percussief inzette. Ze sloeg met een Cd’tje tegen de hoorn en trommelde met haar vingers op haar hoorn en knoppen. Maar ook in die gevallen dat ze ‘gewoon’ speelde, benaderde haar klank, met alle plopjes, piepjes en kraakgeluiden die van percussie opvallend goed.
Sowieso is Keeffe een opvallend experimenteel trompettiste, ik heb in die twee keer een half uur eigenlijk geen ‘normale noot’ gehoord. Zelfs de schaarse melodieuze fragmenten, vaak op gang gebracht door Lisle’s ritmische spel, ontspoorden op grootse wijze. Prachtig om te horen wat een rijke klankwereld Keeffe uit haar instrumenten wist te halen. Steeds wisselend tussen de trompet en de bugel, puur op basis van de sfeer die ze op dat moment wilde neerzetten. Die laatste opmerking brengt me op de samenwerking. Aan alles was te merken dat de twee enorm goed naar elkaar luisterden, op elkaar afgestemd waren. Beurtelings namen ze de leiding, waarop de ander direct aansloot, vaak zodanig dat je het idee kreeg dat er sprake was van een compositie, in plaats van van improvisatie. En ondanks dat deze muziek zich prima leent voor een grote diversiteit aan percussie, beperke Lisle zich tot zijn drumstel en vooruit, een strijkstok. Meer had hij ook niet nodig. Vaak opvallend ritmisch spel, dat zoals gezegd Keeffe bracht tot die melodieën, maar ook regelmatig de abstractie zoekend, vooral in de verstilde passages. In één daarvan, aan het eind van de eerste set, met gebruik van die strijkstok, terwijl Keeffe alles inzet aan valse lucht en sputterend spel, een meesterlijk moment tijdens een prachtig concert.”

Andrew Lisle is a dynamic and unique drummer, someone with a completely individual style and with an extensive sound palette on the drums. Together with Colin Webster and Dirk Serries he forms the working band KODIAN TRIO and he’s frequently-asked musician in the British free impro scene. Charlotte Keeffe is perhaps the most active trumpet player in free improvisation in the United Kingdom, she just released her own album to critically acclaim on the Discus Music label. Charlotte and Andrew already played as duo at the A New Wave Of Jazz festival (early 2020 in London), and this was simply impressive. Extremely dynamic, playful and intense at the same time. Get ready.
Ben Taffijn’s NIEUWE NOTEN just reviewed two of the latest NWOJ releases and 3 (from his 4-day residency) of the performances labelboss DIRK SERRIES performed with a stellar line-up of collaborating musicians at the ROADBURN festival : YODOK III, TONUS and MARTINA VERHOEVEN QUINTET. Het uit twee titelloze stukken bestaande ‘Melancholia’ past helemaal bij de weg die Serries enige jaren geleden al weer is ingeslagen, die van vrije improvisatie, waarbij alle vormen van structuur overboord gaan. Edwards beoefent deze kunst reeds sinds decennia, zoals u ongetwijfeld weet, terwijl je Serries nog een jonkie zou kunnen noemen. Dat mag ik zeggen, hij zal me direct gelijk geven, zo bescheiden is hij wel. En toch valt er ook in deze set niets te merken van kwaliteitsverschil – al denkt hij er zelf wellicht anders over. Zou dat wel zo zijn, dan zouden deze opnames overigens nooit gemaakt zijn, een bassist als Edwards heeft zijn partners immers voor het uitkiezen. Een prachtige combinatie natuurlijk, gitaar en bas. Beiden snaren, alleen de toonhoogte verschilt. Na een vrij hectisch intro valt het nagenoeg stil, fluisterzachte schermutselingen leiden tot een wat vreemdsoortig, maar spannend klanklandschap. En zoals vaker bij dit soort muziek, aan associaties geen gebrek. Is het niet de natuur waar je aan zit te denken, krakend hout, ritselende bladeren, dan is het wel een werkplaats of een fabriekshal waar deze muziek je aan doet denken. Het tweede stuk verloopt niet wezenlijk anders, al vallen hier wel die ritmische passages op, halverwege en helemaal aan het einde. En ook hier horen we die schermutselingen, het kraken, piepen en schaven.
“Op ‘Cure and Mound’ horen we Verhoeven op piano en Mobin op zijn prepared chamber, “een houten kistje met daarin verschillende objecten die met elkaar zijn verbonden en waarvan het geluid wordt versterkt door gitaarelementen en elektrische contactmicrofoons. Een soort combinatie van percussie en elektronica dus”, zo schreef ik eerder naar aanleiding van het eveneens bij A New Wave of Jazz verschenen ‘Close | Quarters’ waarop we Mobin horen met Benedict Taylor. In hetzelfde verslag stond ik stil bij het zeer hoge niveau van abstractie, zodanig dat het de grenzen van het begrip muziek opzoekt. Dat is op dit album niet anders. Ook nu valt bijna niet te ontdekken wie nu eigenlijk precies welk geluid voortbrengt, aangezien Verhoeven nogal eens onder de klep van haar piano duikt, zo geluiden makend die niet echt afwijken van dat wat Mobin doet. Samen creëren ze twee wonderlijke en zeer avontuurlijke geluidssculpturen, ‘Cure’ en ‘Mound’.”

The original stoner rock and metal festival that has been challenging their audience in the last 10 years or so with expanding their musical boundaries and a knack for adventurous programming. This year, together with jazzclub PARADOX, they invited DIRK SERRIES for 4 days – giving the audience a glimpse in his versatile sound universe – from drone to free improvisation.
