OUR THIRD LABEL EVENT

In conjunction with jazzclub PlusEtage (Baarle-Nassau, Netherlands) we are hosting our 3rd label event tomorrow, Friday April 29th, this time inviting the fantastic duo of CHARLOTTE KEEFFE (trumpet) and ANDREW LISLE (drums). Andrew Lisle is a dynamic and unique drummer, someone with a completely individual style and with an extensive sound palette on the drums. Together with Colin Webster and Dirk Serries he forms the working band KODIAN TRIO  and he’s frequently-asked musician in the British free impro scene. Charlotte Keeffe is perhaps the most active trumpet player in free improvisation in the United Kingdom, she just released her own album to critically acclaim on the Discus Music label. Charlotte and Andrew already played as duo at the A New Wave Of Jazz festival (early 2020 in London), and this was simply impressive. Extremely dynamic, playful and intense at the same time. Get ready.

NIEUWE NOTEN

Ben Taffijn’s NIEUWE NOTEN just reviewed two of the latest NWOJ releases and 3 (from his 4-day residency) of the performances labelboss DIRK SERRIES performed with a stellar line-up of collaborating musicians at the ROADBURN festival : YODOK III, TONUS and MARTINA VERHOEVEN QUINTET. Here below you find the album reviews, the concert reviews you can read on his website.

II/III

Due to the extreme vinyl productional delays, the DIRK SERRIES’ SOLO ACOUSTIC GUITAR IMPROVISATIONS II/III (2xLP) release has been in production for a year but finally it’s here and ready to be released on May 6th, when DIRK SERRIES embarks on a short solo/solo/duo tour with COLIN WEBSTER. Listen to a piece from this upcoming release.

TOM WARD

British multi-instrumentalist TOM WARD, who has been already part of the label’s IMPETUS GROUP and featured on the ‘IMAGINARY JOURNEY‘ of himself, Martina Verhoeven, Cath Roberts and Dirk Serries, did a ‘Play Talk Play‘ session with host Rodrigo Constanzo. Very interesting, so check it out.

MELANCHOLIA

Ken Waxman pairs two recent releases to write his careful and colorful thoughts for the Canadian JAZZ WORD magazine. One of those is JOHN EDWARDS & DIRK SERRIES’ Melancholia CD, the other one is GEORGE HADOW & DIRK SERRIES’ Chapel CD (released on Creative Sources).
Melancholia is still available here and here.

“During two almost evenly timed tracks on Melancholia, the string duo negates the concept of dedicated soloist or accompanist. Aggressive strums from the guitarist add as much to the tunes’ percussive bottom as the bassist’s stops and thumps. At the same time, Edwards’ agile buzzes, authoritative sweeps and rattling slides, played arco or pizzicato, are as much a part of the foreground as Serries’ slurred fingering or jagged string plinks near the tuning pegs and below the bridge. With broken octave concordance paramount, the two mostly operate in double counterpoint. Still there are sequences where they break ranks for individual expression such as Edwards’ use of col legno pops or pressurized sul tasto rubs on “II” or Serries’ scratches on the same track that are so forceful that it appears they could remove the strings’ finish. Paced with quiet interludes, each track retains a horizontal flow. Eventually the program finishes with plucks and sweeps juddering back and forth between the two string sets until they combine for a dual climactic vibration.”

THE OTHER LIES REVIEWED

Jean Michel Van Schouwburg’s ORYNX-IMPROV’ANDSOUNDS reviewed TOM JACKSON & COLIN WEBSTER – The Other Lies CD album. Still available here and here.

The Other Lies. J’adore !!

GONZO CIRCUS REVIEWS

This Belgian/Netherlands magazine just reviewed our 3 new releases : MARTINA VERHOEVEN & ANTON MOBIN – Cure And Mound, JOHN EDWARDS & DIRK SERRIES – Melancholia and TOM JACKSON & COLIN WEBSTER – The Other Lies. Still available from our store and bandcamp.

DIRK SERRIES ON ROADBURN

A New Wave Of Jazz’s curator DIRK SERRIES receives an unique opportunity from the magnificent ROADBURN FESTIVAL in conjunction with jazzclub PARADOX in Tilburg to exhibit during the 4 days of this festival what he has been creating over these 38 years in experimental, avantgarde, electronic and free-improvised music.

APRIL 21. The first performance will see Dirk team up with fellow YODOK III member, Kristoffer Lo. Having previously collaborated separately with the ‘other’ third of the band, Tomas Järmyr for The Void of Expansion, it was surely only a matter of time before this pairing would come together too. Dirk will play the electric guitar, whilst Kristoffer will perform with an amplified tuba and flugabone, turning their instinctive passion for melancholic, cycling harmonies into an ambient drone requiem that will mesmerise with its utter beauty.

APRIL 22. All three members of YODOK III will come together for a performance on the Friday – bringing together this improvisational ensemble in an intimate setting that is perfect to see them at the height of their powers. YODOK III is a band that thrives on the adrenaline of improvisation, and the interaction and momentum that it brings. Do not miss this special performance that is sure to be dynamic, engaging and truly transcendental.

APRIL 23. Saturday will bring a performance by TONUS – Dirk’s minimalist ensemble that has a constantly evolving line up (this performance will feature Martina Verhoeven on piano, Colin Webster on saxophone, and Tom Malmendier on drums alongside Dirk). Describing it as “an exercise in discipline and anticipation while controlling the clarity, sustain and effect of each single note played” – we can’t wait to experience TONUS in person. TONUS will perform a brand new piece that blooms outward from a piano-led focal point. As a counter to the electronic-driven work that Dirk is best known for, TONUS offers an acoustic equivalent, and an opportunity to fully immerse ourselves.

The grand finale of Dirk’s residency is the Martina Verhoeven Quintet. Dirk runs a record label, A New Wave of Jazz, which focuses on his quest for free improvised, avant-garde and free jazz music – this curiosity and passion shines through on the final piece of this puzzle. The quintet is built around the piano virtuosity of polymath and multi-instrumentalist, Martina Verhoeven.  The assembled musicians – Dirk on acoustic guitar, Onno Govaert on drums, Gonçalo Almedia on double bass, and Colin Webster on saxophone will create a high tension, free improvisation performance led by Martina’s energetic and unique piano playing.
