DIRK SERRIES – AT FUTURE DAWN (Cd, Cloudchamber Recordings 2024) pre-order here.
“At Future Dawn” is the second Cloudchamber release for Dirk Serries. Picking up where Dirk left off with “Nocturnal Discord”, this album pushes those ambient boundaries once more. Known since the early eighties for his trademark ambient music under the Vidna Obmana pseudonym, Dirk continues to steer his music into new territory using a motherboard of pedal effects and one electric guitar. “At Future Dawn” contains music that constantly breaks down and build itself up again, all done real-time without any specific editing apart from EQ-ing and mixing. The music becomes an organic flow of processing the guitar, carefully analyzing the tonalities to create 6 songs of beauty, introspection and abstractness all at once. Let yourself be immersed in this new world Dirk Serries is creating.
JOURNEYS TO THE INFINITE PODCAST DIRK SERRIES / VIDNA OBMANA : The Modulations of Appearance
For four decades, Dirk Serries has carved a unique path across genres like ambient, avant-garde, industrial, and experimental. Under the pseudonym Vidna Obmana, the Belgian artist garnered global acclaim from 1984 to 2007, leaving behind a prolific discography that showcased his vibrant creativity. Beyond Vidna Obmana, Serries ventured into new directions with Fear Falls Burning and Microphonics series, collaborating with luminaries such as Steven Wilson, Justin K. Broadrick, Low and Cult Of Luna, and touring with bands like MONO, Jesu, Low, and My Bloody Valentine. In October 2013, Serries revived the ambient sound of Vidna Obmana, this time experimenting with the electric guitar instead of synthesizers. The result was an introspective manifestation of sonic purity and subtle harmonies created on the spot in real-time improvisation sessions. Embracing his passion for free jazz, and inspired by legends like Derek Bailey, he emerged as a leading figure in the Belgian impro scene. While still occasionally performing his vintage ambient music, Serries now dedicates most of his time to delving into the depths of free improvised music and curating emerging talent through his label, A New Wave of Jazz. However, despite these transformations and modulations, the core remains the same as in the beginning and Vidna Obmana’s legacy lives on in Serries’ continued exploration of atmospheric soundscapes.
On April 21st, 2024, FEAR FALLS BURNING played their final concert. Where better to conclude the story during the fantastic ROADBURN festival in Tilburg (The Netherlands). FEAR FALLS BURNING in trio constellation with originator DIRK SERRIES (electric guitar, effects, amps), TIM BERTILSSON (drums), and COLIN WEBSTER (tenor sax) recorded their final album THE PRINCIPLE FLAW on Friday at the Sunny Side Inc. Studio (Anderlecht, Belgium) while solidifying the music live at Roadburn on Sunday. Photographer PEDRO ROQUE captured the live performance in its raw beauty. “Fellow countryman Dirk Serries has been on my radar for some time now, though mostly with his ‘Fear Falls Burning’ project. I guess I was somehow late in discovering Vidna Obmana, even though I was there to experience the tail end of the project. While I can honestly say I find his improvised music a bold move, it never managed to grab me properly. I liked his guitar ambient slinging a lot, and from that point, I started to work backwards through his discography. Whenever I heard something new from Fear Falls Burning, I also wanted to hear an older Vidna Obmana – also just because one can. I don’t think I’ve come across ‘Crossing The Trail’ on that particular journey, but I don’t keep lists since I am not an organised man. This CD was originally released in 1998 by Projekt, the label from the man behind Black Tape For A Blue Girl. Vidna Obmana is assisted by ambient masters Jeff Pearce and Steve Roach, and then Martine Verhoeven contributes vocals. Each of the seven pieces takes considerable time to develop – close to eight is the shortest and over fourteen minutes the longest. Glancing back at other Vidna Obmana works from this period, I can say the musical style is instantly recognisable. Somewhere along the way, Vidna Obmana picked up using rhythms, and he uses them to great effect: slow, majestic, and a bit exotic. There are rainmakers and shakers, a Djembe (at least that’s what it sounds like to me), and all along, there are these big washes of spacious synthesiser sounds. By sequencing these, the music gets a slightly more ‘mechanical’ feeling, in which everything feels quite streamlined. At the same time, the whole thing comes across as very organic, and it’s easily a space to get lost in (which I would think is Vidna Obmana’s goal exactly). With the enormous output of such a project, it is never easy to say if one specific work is the ultimate masterpiece between lesser ones. Moreover, that would very much be a personal thing. In the end, I think I heard only a tiny portion of the work, but can I sincerely say ‘Crossing The Trail’ is one I enjoyed? But then again, I did so with many of the other albums.” VITAL WEEKLY
“Crossing The Trail is the next in the series of Vidna Obmana album reissues on Poland’s Zoharum. Originally released in 1998 on Projekt- it’s a seven-track album that shifts from the bright & texturally active tribal ambient. Onto the slightly darker/ more introspective side of the genre, before shifting to the brighter & glowing side of the ambient form- so very much of a journey-like album. The finished/ wholesale release comes in a six-panel digipak- though I can’t comment on this/its artwork, as we were just sent a card slip promo version of the album. This features what looks like a monochrome close-up picture of some seedpods, and it nicely fits in with the look of the rest of this series of reissues. Each of the seven tracks featured runs between seven & fourteen minutes- with each nicely creating its own story/ vibe, though the whole album works as a whole going from bright lushness to more shadowy places, before reappearing in glowing/ warming wonder. We open with “Encountering Terrain” which blends together a mid-paced ethnic percussion & flowing water tone, with a bright weaving/ mellow flute-like melody. It certainly feels hopeful & lush, though with its growing textural depth( of shakes, slithers, scratches ) and percussion fade it does start to become slightly more ominous. By track three “Forest Arrow” things have certainly become more shadowy & mysterious – as we find we slowly jiving ethnic percussion blended with swooping & sweeping mid-ranged drones, and subtly foreboding textural shifts ‘n’ ebbs. By track five “The Esoteric Source” we’re most certainly in darker/ brooding sonic water- as we get a blend of sliding & shadow-like drones, slowly gliding ambient sweep, and a hint of moody percussive shift. The album plays out with the fittingly titled “This Splendid Place” which pares a warm & slowly sweeping string-like ambiance, with gentle textural trickle & rub. The main string element rather brought to mind a brighter/ more life-affirming Stars Of The Lid, with the textural detail really adding to the track’s harmonic pull. Crossing The Trail is masterfully conceived ambient ride. Personally, I’m less keen on the brighter/ lusher elements here, but that’s just a personal preference- though that said I do enjoy the golden & rising wonder of the final track. An album for those very much looking to go on an ambient journey. ” Musique Machine
“Fear Falls Burning performing The Principle Flaw. For just about twenty years now, FEAR FALLS BURNING has been a creative outlet for Dirk Serries; this prolific musician has appeared at Roadburn under many guises over the years. He will return to Roadburn with Fear Falls Burning for the first time since 2019, this time to premiere new music titled The Principle Flaw. Dirk will be joined by impressive, introspective Swedish drummer Tim Bertilsson (of the Switchblade fame) and British saxophone player Colin Webster (famous for his active role in the free improv scene and his live and recorded contributions to Idles’ repertoire). Fear Falls Burning are returning more bleak and more devastating than ever before. Stripped down to the bare essence of his own signature style of guitar playing in combination with the mighty metronome pulses of Tim on drums and the desolate howls and tonal streams of Colin on the sax, this music goes beyond and within. Dirk promises that The Principle Flaw is “an echo which will burst the ear and compromises the mind.”We urge you to give yourselves over to Dirk’s experimental ruminations and perhaps you’ll leave this edition of Roadburn a changed person. – Becky Laverty“

Streams of Consciousness is Dirk Serries’ homage and return (after the closure of vidnaObmana in 2007) to pure harmonic sonic moments. A mix of deep ambient and drone, this collection presents a nearly-3-hour selection of tracks from the 17 releases created in real-time on electric guitar and a handful of effects in Dirk’s home studio, it’s a slowflow inner exploration of sonics and emotional states. Single notes and reverberating washes of guitars ebb and flow over the course of these longform pieces.
The Vast Wilds writes: These pieces are stunning. I could listen to this forever. They are up there with River of Appearance, which I happen to think is a perfect album. Favorite track: harmonious flare.
Dave Aftandilian writes: I loved drifting off to DS’s compositions as vidnaObmana, and these new streams seem to flow directly down from those ideas. The shimmering guitar here has a very organic ambience. At time while listening I feel like I’m floating in deep space, at others that I am a piece of driftwood being gently rocked by ocean waves, and at still others it’s as if I’m lying stretched out in the grass, the sun gently warming my face as I watch puffy white clouds slowly drifting by.

Some Bandcamp fan quotes: “Ambient guitar drone at its best from none other than the best.”
“Whatever your definition of bliss is, Dirk Serries has the power to change it forever.” “From the depths of his inner world to the ears of our sensory world, Dirk Serries is a master at the top of his game. A must have…”
“For me, Dirk Series literally walks on water. He has an amazing talent and uses it well. From his days as vidnaObmana to operating under his own name, the quality of the audio experience has always been exceptional.”
“This is one of those albums where you really begin to question what is more important, the note or the space between the notes. Perhaps it is the SOUND between the notes, the sound of the previously played note fading. Regardless, Dirk Serries paints a very gentle picture of blissful yet slightly lonely place, a place of silent introspection and reflection. Simply fantastic.”
“Sensational drones from the undisputed master of the genre.”
